String gauge — How do you choose a set?

The right string gauge depends on the instrument, the tuning and the way you play. Lighter strings usually make bends easier, while heavier ones can feel more solid in lower tunings.

Scale length and string type also affect tension and flexibility. Two sets with the same numbers on the pack don't necessarily feel the same.

Before changing sets, think about what you're missing: easier bends, firmer low strings or a better response when you dig in? A big change in gauge may call for a check of the truss rod, the nut and the intonation. On a Floyd Rose bridge, the balance with the springs changes too.
