Floyd Rose — It's all about balance

On a floating Floyd Rose, the string tension balances against the pull of the springs in the back of the body. That's why tuning one string temporarily shifts the tuning of the others.

A change of string gauge or tuning may call for a new balance adjustment, along with a check of the action and intonation. When you keep the same set, changing one string at a time usually makes the job easier.

If the bridge doesn't return to pitch, the pivot points, the locking nut and the string clamps are inspected. Overtightening doesn't fix wear. With proper maintenance and setup, the system can give you a lot of expressive freedom and solid tuning stability.
